"Well, you consider a man as educated if only he can pass some examinations and deliver good lectures? The education which does not help the common mass of people to equip themselves for the struggle for life, which does not bring out strength of character, a spirit of philanthropy and the courage of a lion—is it worth the name? Real education is that which enables one to stand on one's own legs" - Swami Vivekananda

IDF believes that education is not just about academic proficiency but also about the skills and values that go along with it. An individual who can make a positive contribution towards society should possess a strong value system, soft skills, professional ethics, and vocational training.

With this belief, we strive towards internalizing these qualities in adolescent girls whom we believe hold the key towards unlocking the closed doors of our society. We see in them the sincerity, determination and the good heart for not just doing a job well but also being capable of inspiring others in their communities and spreading hope.

Nayi Pahal (meaning 'A New Phase' in English ) is a vocational training program which was launched in 2010.

It aims to provide vocational training to adolescent girls and women in handicraft related skills such as making of jute bags and mobile stands, pot making, clay modeling, candle making, jewelry making, embroidery and decorative items.

Nayi Pahal is built on the basis that once a family decides to send their daughter to school, it is generally expected, and especially amongst under-privileged communities, that the education will make a difference to the employability of their child. In accordance with this expectationand to bring about a practical angle to education, this program aims at making girls skilled, literate and self-sustained.

Ekal is an open summer school for adolescent girls enrolled in the Honhaar Ladki program. Ekal is a 40 day summer school that aims to develop social skills, incorporate ethical behavior and impart self-confidence through skills building classes. The girls enrolled are also imparted with self-defense skills and personality development coaching to enable them to be strong and confident women of tomorrow. Ekal is a way to keep the students productively engaged during their summer vacation.
